Alpine Fault (Pacific Plate)
The Alpine Fault, or Pacific Plate, goes right through the middle, & then to the west, across the South Island of New Zealand, & almost touches Antarctica.
This Pacific Plate is known to many people as the Ring of Fire, because it’s surrounded by volcanoes.
It goes around the Americas, Australia & Europe, but it cuts through New Zealand. It made a mountain range through the South Island from Milford Sound to about Picton, called the Southern Alps, the ‘backbone’ of the S.I (South Island).Holly, 2.9.13
