Camp Sutton Day 1!
Well here we are at camp and what a day of adventure we've had! First a ride in the train, then a windy, long (15km) bike ride, followed by a well deserved swim in the Middlemarch pool. We are having a blast!

Archaeopteryx revealed!
We didn't do too badly with putting our skeletons together! It was pretty tricky! We worked out that they were meat eaters with wings and one group decided that it had a tail. This was an interesting activity that challenged what we already knew about dinosaurs. We think that palaeontologists have a pretty tricky job!
The Mystery Fossil Activity
Today we have been palaeontologists discovering a new species of dinosaur! We have found some bones and now have to work out how the skeleton might fit together. Then we need to think about what the skeleton might tell us - did it fly? Was it a meat eater? How big do we think it may have been?
We are focusing on effective group skills - listening to each other's ideas, supporting each other, making sure our group is inclusive.

Crafting Sentences
This week we have been crafting sentences. We were making our sentences clearer and make sure we're leaving in the important details.
This is my sentence:
A terrible earthquake just hit Christchurch and killed hundreds of people.
I worked on this sentence and then chose my favourite new sentence:
A huge terrible earthquake killed hundreds of people in Christchurch.

Farewell Ethan
...Ethan You have been a huge part of my world for the last 2 years and 4 months. I can’t tell you how many photos and videos I have taken of you,
My own boys have made the comment that there are more photos of you on my phone and laptop than there are of them.
They are right of course.
Wow we have had some very special days. It has been a truly rich experience working with you and I have loved it.
I wish you well in Heriot. I will keep up with your progress...
Here is the slideshow I made using some of the photos and videos I have taken. I hope you enjoy it

I am looking forward to EVERYTHING that we are doing this week. I think there will be fast and competitive runners at the Cross Country. The thing I'm looking forward to the most is definitely going to the University of Otago to look at the Rock Museum. The Rock Museum is the biggest in the South Island.
Last year there was 300 students at the Ukulele Jam.

Reading this week...
This week for reading you may be given a task that requires you to do some 'digging' of your own. Use the website links below to help you.
Glaciers
Science Kids - Earth Facts
Science Kids - Videos: Earth
Te Ara: Wetlands and their landforms
Remember - if you are taking notes, you need to use your 'own' words. This shows your understanding of the information. Remember to record any new questions that you have after reading. Asking questions shows your thinking!!

Painting With Watercolours
Painting
with Water colours.
I learnt
that you can go over some dry paint with a different coloured paint. You can use a wet brush on wet paper and a
dry brush on dry paper. I am proud of my
landscape because I used all of the information from my sketch.
Painting
with water colours makes me happy, because I can do lots of effects with
water colours.
I especially
like the texture of dabbing with a giant brush to create really fine strokes to build up my picture.

St clair sand dune loss!!
Tom and Wiremu have been reading an article abut st Clair's sand dune loss. Since the 24th of July 2015 the dunes have lost approximately 5 metres of sand. The sand sausages that were placed in the sand dunes have been dug up by erosion. The worry for the sand dunes are the spring king tides. They come when it is a new full moon at the same time the moon is at its closest to the earth.

Structure your writing to include the following information:
Structure your writing to include the following information:
- the purpose of our experiment - We wanted to find out...(how the plains, like the Taieri plains were made/created/formed)
- how we did this - To do this we carried out an experiment using...
- what we observed - We noticed that... (the murky/dirty/silty water began to clear...Layers of...)
- what we think - We think this happened because (the heavy particles sank quickly/rapidly and began to settle...)
- conclusions about our observations - Over time we think that...This links in with how the plains are created because...
Have a go writing your explanation! I look forward to seeing them tomorrow!

The History of Earth (HD - 720P)
Our Inquiry topic this term is 'Digging Up the Past'. In class we have been exploring the creation of our planet. We have been using the video below to help us learn & think about these big ideas. Watch the rest of the video at home. I am looking forward to hearing about what you have learnt! Remember to think about & discuss the new information - show you are thinking & making connections by asking questions. Write down any questions or wonderings you have and share them with us in class.
Max's Holiday Writing
This week for writing we have been focusing on creating writing that is interesting and engaging for our readers. A goal for our writing was to create a first sentence that 'hooks our readers in'. We have been making careful choices about what information to include in our writing, ensuring that the important details are included.
Here is Max's writing from this week. We would love it if you would read this writing and post a comment for Max. What makes this good writing? What is your favourite sentence or part of the writing?
At The Movies
The lights are slowly turning off. It is dark. The movie starts. We are starting to eat our popcorn and drink our Bubbles. The lollies were good. There was a part of the movie when a minion took all his clothes off except his underwear.
A villain got so angry she got her lava gun.She went to the castle! The door broke and it fell to the ground. She pointed the gun at the three minions and Bob gave the crown to the villain. Then the villain was the Queen.
The villain had an acid grenade that can destroy anything.

Storybird
Today we created a class story using Storybird. We focused on creating an interesting story that used the images as a support. We discussed the characteristics of picture books. In our story we decided to use some rhyme and some alliteration. We discovered the difficulty around having the whole story rhyme when we tried to find lots of words that rhymed with mouse! These are some of the decision we have to make as writers.
Click on the link below to read our amazing story! We would love some feedback.

Poor Sean!
Poor Sean
came to the staffroom in a distressed state after getting an enormous splinter
in his foot. (From walking on the deck in bare feet)
Three
centimetres of the jagged splinter, thick as a matchstick, were still
protruding from the wound and the shocked teachers were unsure how far the
stick had gone in. Having recently completed their first aid training they all
knew not to try and pull the rough wooden shard out but get Sean to a medical
centre for treatment. Sean put on a very brave face as the splinter was removed
and he was given a tetanus shot (injection) to ensure the wound did not become
infected. Sean’s foot will be tender to walk on for some time.

Inquiry Question
Today we looked at early Maori explorers and what they would have faced on their journey to New Zealand. We looked at how they would have navigated the ocean. In the article that we read as a class they mentioned a tool called the 'Tirito 'etu' or starpeeker. It looked like a coconut with holes in it in certain places. We wondered how they would use it.
Homework tonight! See who can find out some details about this tool.
